Grand Canyon freshman goalkeeper
Lauren Garthwaite was named WAC Defensive Player of the Week after a shutout of Kansas City last week.
Â
In one of the team's most complete performances of the season, Garthwaite made six saves during a 2-0 shutout of the Roos at GCU Stadium to rank third in the conference for saves this season with 61. That mark also ranks her eighth in saves among all NCAA freshman goalies.
Â
The shutout of Kansas City was just the second time that the defending regular-season WAC champions have been held scoreless this season.
Â
The Lopes moved into a tie for fourth place with Utah Valley and CSU Bakersfield in the conference standings with six points. The Roos, who were picked to finish second in the WAC preseason poll, now sit at seventh.
Â
GCU have two important games this week, starting with a home match against Seattle U on Friday before heading to California Baptist on Sunday. Both teams sit above the Lopes in the conference standings.
