The Grand Canyon women's soccer team shut out defending WAC regular-season champion Kansas City 2-0 at GCU Stadium on Thursday night in the home conference opener.
The Lopes (3-9-1, 2-1 WAC) played one of the most complete games of the season to shut out the top WAC offense, outshoot the Roos 22-12 and move into third place in the WAC.
"Very proud of the performance the ladies put in," GCU head coach
Derek Leader said. "It's taken us a while to get going. Even through a couple minor injuries, we've been able to find our rhythm. We were able to knock off a bigtime team that was the regular-season champs the last two years in a row, and I'm excited for what lies ahead."
GCU jumped out to a first-half lead, thanks to redshirt freshman forward
Dani Babb scoring her first career goal unassisted in the 19th minute. Babb picked up the loose ball in the penalty box, and took a right-footed shot that went off the crossbar and into the goal. After missing all of last season with an injury, the goal meant everything to Babb.
"I literally was speechless when it happened," Babb said. "I just took the shot and I saw it hit crossbar and I was like 'Oh no, I missed it,' but then it hit the net and I was like 'Oh my gosh, it just went it in.' That was one of the most craziest things in my life."
After the early goal, the Lopes defense locked down to keep Kansas City (8-2-4, 0-1-2) to seven shots in the first half and five in the second half. GCU freshman goalkeeper
Lauren Garthwaite finished with six saves in her second career shutout.
The win was sealed for the Lopes in the 79th minute when junior forward
Camryn Larson scored on a header amid three Roos defenders. The scoring chance in the box was set up when sophomore forward
Remmi Deutsch passed to the wide-left side of the field for freshman midfielder
Nyah Bonchonsky, who set a high crossing pass to Larson to redirect for the 2-0 lead.
It was the second time in the past three matches that the Lopes have scored two goals after scoring a total of five goals during nonconference play.
The Lopes will be back in action against Seattle at home on Oct. 18.
