The Grand Canyon women's basketball team looks to end the month of January in the win column on Saturday when the Lopes host California Baptist at 2 p.m. in GCU Arena.
GCU is 2-4 this month in WAC play with wins over Seattle U (triple overtime) and New Mexico State, but the Lopes have a chance to move into a sixth-place tie in the conference with a home victory against the Lancers.
GCU is paced by a pair of seniors in center
ShaRon Miller (11.7 points per game) and power forward
AJ Cephas (10.0 ppg), while freshmen guards
Laura Piera (4.3 assists per game) and
Taylor Caldwell (3.5 apg) lead the Lopes in playmaking.
Scouting California Baptist
In its first season in the WAC, California Baptist is 8-9 overall and 2-3 in WAC play. The Lancers opened the season with a loss to Idaho State but turned around two days later to beat Long Beach State 85-83. CBU then lost five straight games to Cal State Fullerton, Northern Arizona, San Diego State, BYU and Cal State Northridge, but snapped the streak with a win over La Sierra.
The Lancers enjoyed a five-game winning streak, starting with the La Sierra win and following it with victories against UC Riverside, Fresno Pacific, Notre Dame de Namur and UC Santa Barbara.Â
California Baptist has lost to New Mexico State, Texas-Rio Grande Valley and Kansas City in WAC play, but defeated Chicago State at home 89-52. Most recently, the Lancers hosted Westcliff and won by 90 points, 133-43. CBU is coming off a 68-45 win at CSU Bakersfield on Thursday night, the Lancers held the Roadrunners to 25 percent shooting and was led by junior guard Delacy Brown's 20 points and seven rebounds and junior forward Britney Thomas' 12 points and 13 rebounds. Thomsa leads the team in points per game (14.6) and rebounds per game (11.6).
