Student-athlete leaders participate in year-long development program
The Grand Canyon Office of Student-Athlete Development announced the launch of the Building Champions Leadership Academy, a year-long development program for student-athlete leaders.
The BCLA consists of 18 student-athletes, representing 11 teams, who were selected from an extensive application process in the spring.
"We are ecstatic to finally launch the Building Champions Leadership Academy to develop, challenge and empower our student-athlete leaders," GCU senior associate athletics director for student-athlete development Jason Linders said. "Our goal is to prepare them with applicable ways to lead and provide them with tools they can apply within their respective teams and in life after sports."
The program was created to teach student-athletes how to positively manage changes in their sports, careers and personal lives. Through the BCLA, student-athletes will develop a strong sense of self-leadership style assessments and reflection on core values to better one another.
BCLA members will have the chance to network with business professionals through a one-on-one career mentorship program, which will help student-athletes apply leadership skills and social responsibility to prepare themselves for their desired careers. The BCLA will give members an opportunity to positively use their platforms to engage and influence the campus and community at GCU.
"Many student-athletes are natural leaders, but are often not equipped with the tools necessary to lead effectively," Linders said. "However, this is an exceptional group of student-athlete leaders and we cannot wait to see the impact they have on their teams, the campus, the heart of Phoenix and our community."
The BCLA will run from September to April, finishing with a service learning trip in the spring.
