The Grand Canyon women's soccer team earned a fourth-place spot in the 2018 WAC preseason poll, announced Wednesday by the league office. Along with the team honor, senior midfielder
McKenzie Cook was named to the preseason All-WAC squad. The league's coaches selected these honors and could not vote for their own student-athletes.
The 2017 regular season champion, Kansas City, earned the top spot in the preseason poll with 60 points and five first-team votes. Trailing closely behind is Utah Valley, last season's WAC tournament champion. Seattle U rounded out the top three with 50 points.
Last season, GCU finished sixth in the conference with a record of 6-13-2 and 2-4-1 in conference play. The Lopes pulled the upset over third-seeded UT Rio Grande Valley in the opening round of the WAC tournament, winning 2-1. Both goals were scored by Cook who now finds herself on the preseason awards list for the first time in her career.
Cook, a midfielder from Silverdale, Wash., led the Lopes in most offensive categories including goals, assists, points and shots on goal while starting in all 21 games last season. She also led the conference in shots and shots per game, and earned All-WAC first team and WAC All-Tournament team honors last season.
The Lopes begin the 2018 season with an exhibition match on Friday, Aug. 10, against Colorado College at the Scottsdale Sports Complex. The regular season kicks off on the road on Aug. 17 at Gonzaga.
