EL PASO, Texas – In the first of four consecutive road games, the Grand Canyon women's soccer team suffered a 2-1 loss at Texas-El Paso on Friday night at University Field.
Senior midfielder
Kelsey Smith scored the lone goal of the game for the Lopes. Grand Canyon (1-4) tallied nine shots on the night, including five on frame, while the Miners (3-2) fired 21 shots with seven on goal. GCU senior goalkeeper
Abby Burton made five saves on the night, all of which came in the second half.
Smith put the Lopes on the scoreboard first in the 21st minute with a long ball from the right side after a feed from sophomore defender
Mikaela McGee in the midfield. Smith's shot was initially deflected by the UTEP goalkeeper, but the deflected ball went into the left side of the net for the score.
After a Lopes defensive foul in the box in the 41st minute, the Miners evened the score with a penalty kick goal and the first half ended in a 1-1 tie. Senior midfielder
McKenzie Cook led the Lopes with a pair of shots in the first half.
UTEP found the back of the net again in the 71st minute for the go-ahead goal in the second half after a long throw found the foot of Anna Jimmerson in the box.
The Lopes continue the Texas road trip with a Sunday match at Texas-San Antonio. Kickoff is set for 11 a.m. (Phoenix time).
