Following the first weekend of competition for the Grand Canyon women's soccer team, senior goalkeeper
Abby Burton was tabbed Western Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week, announced Monday by the league office. Burton's honor is the first of her career with the Lopes.
A senior from Peoria, Arizona, Burton tallied 22 total saves over a pair of extra-time performances on the road. With 15 saves on Friday night in a double overtime loss to Gonzaga, Burton tied a GCU Division I record and recorded the most saves of any Lopes keeper since 2015.
She followed up the stellar performance with seven saves on Sunday against No. 21 Washington State in a 1-0 overtime loss. The Cougars roster includes striker Morgan Weaver, a member of the U.S. U-23 National Team, who fired seven shots at Burton on the game.
Burton holds a goals-against average of 1.40 after the opening weekend on the road. The Lopes open the 2018 home slate on Friday with a 4 p.m. matchup against Houston Baptist.
