#SummerLopes: Where they're headed

Summer baseball destinations range from Alaska to Massachusetts
The end of GCU's spring season doesn't mark the end of baseball for most of the Lopes' returning players. The summer months bring a new opportunity for continued development, scattering GCU's players all across the country to join up with a new team, see a new part of the country, face some varied competition, and improve their game for the 2019 season.
"It's a great opportunity to see different parts of the country," head coach Andy Stankiewicz said. "It's a great time to meet new people and new teammates. They come back more mature and more experienced in the game. A lot of them come back better players."
The summer of 2018 will see the Lopes head out to some of the most prestigious summer leagues in the country.
Most notably, Quin Cotton -- the reigning Western Athletic Conference Player of the Year -- will head out to the Cape Cod League on the East Coast to play for the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox. Cotton will be joined in the league by incoming GCU pitcher Kade Mechals who will play for the Orleans Firebirds.
The Cape is reserved for the nation's elite players and features a host of professional scouts in the front rows of every game. In 2017 alone, the Cape Cod League had 306 alumni play in a Major League Baseball game.
Jake Wong's professional stock continued to rise by a strong season in the Cape Cod League last summer, culminating in a third-round selection by the San Francisco Giants in this year's MLB Draft.
Beyond the Cape, GCU's talent is headed to other premier leagues including the Northwoods League, the Alaska League and the West Coast League.
"They compete against some of the best, the guys from the bigger schools," Stankiewicz said. "They return and realize, 'Hey, I can compete against this guy.' It helps get our guys to believe that we can compete against anybody. That's part of why we send them out as well."
Many leagues got underway as early as May 25 while the Cape Cod League is gearing up for a June 12 opening day.
