Grand Canyon opens up a five-game homestand against the New Mexico schools on Tuesday. First up, it's the Lobos of the Mountain West Conference for a two-game, mid-week series. GCU and New Mexico are meeting for the fourth consecutive season.
First pitch is set for 6 p.m. MST on Tuesday's opener and 2 p.m. MST on the Wednesday finale of the brief series.
Â
THREE THINGS TO KNOW
- FIELDING... CHECK: Grand Canyon enters the week having not committed an error in five straight games and eight of its last 11. It's the first stretch of five or more error-free games since the Lopes went seven straight games without committing an error from April 3-15, 2015 in games against Texas-Pan American, Northern Colorado and New Mexico. GCU's .979 fielding percentage ranks 19th nationally.
Â
- PITCHING... CHECK: In its last five games, GCU pitching has limited its opponents to eight runs on 27 hits with a 1.60 ERA. The Lopes' staff ERA in April sits at 3.29. For the Illinois series, the starting pitching combination of Jake Wong, Jake Repavich and Ethan Evanko limited the No. 25 Illini to 13 hits in 17.0 innings of work while posting a 2.12 ERA.
Â
- MID-WEEK SUCCESS: GCU has won three of its last four mid-week matchups, its best string of success in such games since winning three of four vs. Arizona, Nevada and Kansas in 2014.
Â
SCOUTING
An offense that hit .318 en route to a Mountain West Conference Regular Season Championship last season is hitting just .265. New Mexico's 6.88 staff ERA ranks as one of the bottom 30 nationally.
New Mexico won two of three games against UNLV at home over the weekend. The Lobos won games by scores of 8-5 and 11-2 before dropping the finale 8-3.
Connor Mang (.333) and Hayden Schilling (.311) represent the two players hitting over .300 for New Mexico. Jared Mang leads the team with six home runs.
Last year, the Lopes and Lobos split a mid-week series in Albuquerque.Â
Jack Schneider got his first collegiate start in the opener, and he tossed 4.1 innings of two-hit, one-run baseball and exited with a Grand Canyon lead in hand. Schneider went on to start his first weekend game five days later and finish the year 7-0 as the Lopes' Sunday starter. GCU out-hit New Mexico 14-4 in Game 1. The Lobos came back and blew out GCU 22-3 in the second game.
Â
LAST TIME OUT
- GCU took two of three games from No. 25 Illinois.
- It was the first weekend series win over a top-25 opponent since taking two from No. 22 Oklahoma State in 2016.
- The Lopes won a mid-week game against UC Riverside, 6-1, last Wednesday.
Â
WHAT'S NEXT
- The Lopes host New Mexico State for a three-game series featuring two of the top teams in the conference.
