PHOENIX, Ariz. – Brianna Aguilar-Beaucage and the Grand Canyon softball team split games against Georgetown (6-14) to kick off the GCU Invitational at GCU Softball Stadium. The Lopes (15-11) lost in ten innings, 6-5, before ending the second game in six innings, 8-0.
Aguilar-Beaucage toed the rubber for game two and shined, allowing just one hit and striking out six over six innings of work.
Alexa Coons (7-2) recorded a loss for just the second time on the season.
Laynee Gomez led the offense with five RBI and
Shea Smith followed close behind with four of her own.
GAME ONE
Coons stepped in the circle and looked to build on her hot start but Georgetown jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first thanks to an RBI double. GCU responded in the fifth by way of
Shea Smith's RBI single, tying the game.
The tie would last an inning until the Hoyas homered to center field, adding two more.
Shea Smith would provide the Lopes answer yet again with a hard hit single to center field, scoring one and cutting the deficit. Gomez added on with a sacrifice fly, scoring
Loriann Olson and bringing the score even.
The back-and-forth run scoring continued throughout the eighth and ninth with
Madelyn Dowdle knotting it up at 4-4 with a sacrifice fly. The Lopes trailed by one heading into the ninth, as Gomez stepped up and laced an RBI single, scoring
Shea Smith to force extras.
The game would go to the tenth inning, tying the season's longest for the Lopes, before a Georgetown fielder's choice gave the visitors the 6-5 victory.
Taylor Kaye and Olson led the Lopes bats going 3-4 and 3-6, respectively, while
Shea Smith and Gomez each notched two RBI.
Coons dropped just her second game of the year while striking out six.
GAME TWO
Despite going extras in game one, the Lopes offense didn't skip a beat, scoring early and often during the nightcap.
Gomez got the scoring going with a big two RBI single, plating the Smith sisters.
Shea Smith followed up in the third with a pair of RBI of her own after a double up the middle.
Ahead 4-0, the Lopes added some insurance in the fourth when
Sierra Smith and Gomez knocked in a pair of runs.
Sierra Smith kept the hot bat going, this time knocking a triple and scoring her sister.
Bottom of the sixth and up 7-0, enter Maddie Dowdle - the junior put her mark on the night with a hard hit double to left field, scoring
Taylor Kaye to end the game.
Aguilar-Beaucage was nearly perfect on the night, allowing one hit and striking out six over 6.0 innings of work.
GCU continues the tournament tomorrow taking on Iowa and Minnesota at 1:30 and 6:30 p.m..
