PHOENIX, Ariz. – The Big Ten Conference pair of Iowa (7-7) and Minnesota (14-8) tripped up the Grand Canyon softball team on Saturday at the GCU Invitational, as the Lopes (15-13) fell to the Hawkeyes in game one, 12-1, and the Gophers in game two, 10-2.
Junior third baseman
Sierra Smith extended her hit streak to 11 games on the day, as she tallied a hit apiece in each game.
GCU held off Minnesota through six full innings with a hot defense and three double plays before a top of the seventh surge put the Gophers ahead in game two.
GAME ONE
Iowa put on 12 runs in the first three frames to take a 12-0 lead over the Lopes.
Three singles to lead off the top of the fourth frame loaded the bases for GCU, allowing
Laynee Gomez to hit a sacrifice fly to put the Lopes on the board, 12-1.
The Lopes couldn't get anything going in the top of the fifth, and the game ended early due to the run rule.
Shea Smith was 1-2 on the game with a run. The trio of
Brianna Aguilar-Beaucage,
Alexa Coons and
Mariah Valencia dished out a combined four strikeouts.
GAME TWO
The Gophers got on the board right away with an RBI single to right field, but neither team could get anything going until the bottom of the fifth frame.
Taylor Kaye got on base after an error from the UMN third baseman, allowing Gomez to come home for the game-tying score.
A hot GCU defense came into play through six innings, as the infield turned three double plays including a solo double play by freshman
Kaylee Dietrich.
Minnesota went off for nine runs in the top of the seventh to open the scoring and take a 10-1 lead over GCU.
The Lopes added a run after
Bianca Boling reached on an error by the first baseman, allowing Gomez to score for GCU in the bottom of the seventh.
The Lopes return for the third day of the GCU Invitational tomorrow to face Iowa in an 11:30 a.m. (MST) contest. GCU and Iowa will close out the tournament on Monday at 7 p.m.
