TUCSON, Arizona – The Grand Canyon women's golf team moved up two spots on the final day of the Wildcat Invitational at Sewailo Golf Club.
Deanna Salvatori led the charge with the second best round in school history, and the top mark since the NCAA DI championship eligible era began.
"It was good to see the team bounce back after the final nine of our 36-hole day," said head coach
Lauren Giesecke. "Yesterday we had moments of greatness, but we let fatigue and excuses get the best of us, so our focus today was finishing strong and having great attitudes. Everyone came out and did their part and I am very proud of their fight and heart."
The tournament featured a strong field as No. 1 UCLA won the 17-team event. GCU finished in 14
th place with a 908 total. The Lopes shot a final round 299, compared to NM State's final round of 306. The Lopes ended the tournament with a three shot advantage over the Aggies, arguably GCU's main competitor at the Western Athletic Conference championships to be played in Phoenix on April 16-18.
"Siri (Patchana) and Deanna kept up with some of the best players in the country and it was really exciting to watch them tap into their potential," said Giesecke. "Deanna had an exceptional final round and it was fun to watch her break through and shoot a tournament career low! She is going into the final part of the season with momentum, and it'll be a great ending to her successful collegiate career at GCU!"
GCU also finished ahead of a power five program in Iowa. The Lopes will see both NM State and Iowa in 10 days in a tournament held in Puerto Vallarta.
The final round was headlined by Salvatori who tied the best round of the day, a 5-under par round of 67. Salvatori had an incredible stretch, recording six straight birdies from holes five through 10.
Salvatori moved up 33 spots and into the top-10 with her final-round 67. The senior finished ninth overall, a big finish against top golfers out west that should improve and solidify her individual ranking.
Siripatsorn Patchana recorded a top-20, finishing with a 75. The freshman finished with a 219 total (68-76-75).
Courtney Vogel finished with a 232 (77-79-76),
Alexis Linam with a 254 (82-91-81) and
Leleaga Meredith at 258 (92-78-86).
"Overall, I am really proud of this group and their drive to get better every event," said Giesecke. "It was a great opportunity for us to learn from and compete with some of the best programs in the country."
GCU is back in action on March 16-17 at the Hawkeye-El Tigre Invitational at El-Tigre Golf Club in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.
