Grand Canyon is set to play its first road conference series of the season, heading north to Colorado for a three-game set with Northern Colorado. The series gets underway on Thursday and spans through Saturday.
Â
THREE THINGS TO KNOW
- GO FOR THREE: Grand Canyon has already surpassed last season's triple total (10) with its 11th triple of the season last weekend. Entering the week, GCU is tied for fourth nationally in triples. Zach Malis -- who hit two last weekend -- leads the team with three on the season.
Â
- BUDDING BULLPEN: Grand Canyon's bullpen had a fantastic week amid a five-game span against Kansas and Chicago State at GCU Ballpark. The Lopes ended the week with a 12.0-inning scoreless streak and a 10.1-inning hitless streak. Coen Wynne, Nick Ohanian, Mick Vorhof and Mike Lundin combined to put the bullpen on the latest scoreless streak by putting up zeroes against Chicago State over the weekend.
Â
- COLORADO HOMECOMING: A trip to Colorado marks a return to the home state for junior Marc Mumper and sophomore Quin Cotton. In Mumper's first series in his home state as a freshman in 2016, he slugged his first career homer -- a three-run blast. Cuba Bess is also from Colorado but did not make the trip due to injury.
Â
SCOUTING
Entering the week, Northern Colorado ranked 26th in the nation with a .299 batting average. The Bears also rank 23rd in scoring at 7.4 runs per game.
The Bears are looking to build off of a successful run in the WACÂ Tournament last season. Despite finishing sixth and being seeded No. 5 for the tournament (due to GCU's ineligibility), Northern Colorado pulled back-to-back upsets over Utah Valley (6-4) and top-seeded New Mexico State (5-4). Northern Colorado's season was ended with consecutive losses to Sacramento State and CSU Bakersfield. Northern Colorado was picked to finish 8th of 9 in the WAC.
Northern Colorado posted a 13-run first inning and didn't look back in a 35-11 win over nearby Regis (Division II) on Tuesday. The Bears opened conference play with an 8-4 win over Utah Valley last Friday. Northern Colorado lost both games of a run-heavy doubleheader to drop the series to the Wolverines. UNC fell by scores of 15-14 and 15-5.
Junior outfielder Jack Pauley was Northern Colorado's lone representative on the Preseason All-WAC team. Five Northern Colorado players have a batting average over .340 on the season led by Austin Miller at .375.
Last year, the Lopes posted a dominant sweep over Northern Colorado at home. GCU out-scored the Bears 31-5 in the series including a 12-2 mercy-rule win in the finale. The Lopes hit .400 for the series.
Jake Wong threw 7.1 innings of scoreless, two-hit baseball in GCU's 7-0 shutout victory in the series opener. For the second straight year,
Marc Mumper hit a three-run homer against the Bears. Mumper's blast gave GCU a 3-0 lead before the Lopes went on to win 12-3.
Â
LAST TIME OUT
- After trailing in all three games, the Lopes mounted comebacks three times to post a sweep of Chicago State. It was the 10th consecutive conference series victory for GCU.
Â
WHAT'S NEXT
- GCU returns to host six straight including two with nationally-ranked UNLV, a three-game series against Utah Valley, and an in-state matchup with Arizona.
