GREELEY, Colo. - Behind a five-hit day from
Quin Cotton and six scoreless innings from
Jake Wong, Grand Canyon routed Northern Colorado 18-1 in a shortened, seven-inning contest on Thursday afternoon. The Lopes moved to 4-0 to open Western Athletic Conference play.
GCU posted its largest margin of victory since blasting Seattle U 19-0 on May 6 last year.
"I thought we did a really good job of just being disciplined at the plate," head coach
Andy Stankiewicz said. "We put really good at bats together early and we kept getting to the next guy. We put the ball in play. We put pressure on them. We got a lot of walks and minimized the strikeouts. We put some good at bats together to jump out early."
The Lopes got hits from eight different batters, including multi-hit efforts from Cotton,
Ian Evans,
Preston Pavlica,
Kona Quiggle,
Griffin Barnes and
Marc Mumper.
Cotton's five hits marked the third five-hit game since GCU's return to Division I for the 2014 season. Cotton joins the likes of
Tom Lerouge (May 17, 2016) and Chad De La Guerra (Feb. 15, 2015) who each had 5-for-6 days.
"Put the ball in play and we give ourselves a chance," Stankiewicz said. "That's what he did. He had a double down the line to start the first inning, which was big. He did a nice job of using the right side on the ground and he got one through the left as well. He's starting to learn how to use the whole field. It's good to see him use the whole diamond."
Northern Colorado entered the game with the nation's 10th-best batting average (.313), but Wong (4-1, 1.82) stymied the Bears from the beginning. In 6.0 innings of work, Wong allowed just one hit and one walk, retiring 18 of the 20 he faced. The right-hander posted six strikeouts.
"Jake, right from the get-go, started pounding the zone," Stankiewicz said. "He had great command of his fastball, and his breaking ball was really good today. It was really tight and had a good bite to it. That team can hit. To give up just one hit to that team, that means you pitched it, because that team is pretty offensive."
The Lopes took the lead in the second at bat of the game after
Austin Bull drew a leadoff walk and scored on a double down the left field line by Cotton.
GCU posted four runs on four hits in the second and four more runs on five hits in the third to blow the game open. The Lopes' biggest inning came in the sixth where they scored six runs. GCU also swiped a season-high five bags on the afternoon.
Over their last eight innings, the Lopes have scored 28 runs (3.5 runs per inning).
Northern Colorado scored its lone run on two hits in the bottom of the seventh inning. The Bears prevented the shutout, but didn't prevent the game from ending in seven innings due to the mercy rule.
The two teams meet again on Friday afternoon for Game 2 of the series. LHP
Jake Repavich (1-2, 7.30) will go up against freshman lefty Gavin Gorrell (0-0, 4.91). First pitch time has been moved one hour earlier to 12 p.m. MST.
