Returning from a four-game road trip in California last week, the Lopes will play five games in six days at Brazell Field at GCU Ballpark. First, the Lopes will play their first multi-game mid-week series of the season, welcoming in Kansas for a pair of meetings on Tuesday night and Wednesday afternoon.
Â
THREE THINGS TO KNOW
- PLAY IT AGAIN: The Lopes and Jayhawks have previously met 11 times, with seven of the meetings coming in the past four seasons. This week's series marks the fifth consecutive season that the two programs will meet, the longest running non-conference series among all of GCU's opponents. Prior to last year, the two schools had split the all-time series down the middle at 4-4-1. The Jayhawks claimed both meetings in Phoenix last year to break the stalemate.
Â
- COTTON'S HOT STREAK:Â Sophomore outfielder Quin Cotton went 10-for-19 last week, highlighted by a career night at UC Riverside last Wednesday. Cotton posted four hits and four RBIs in the GCU loss. He had multi-hit outings in two of the three games over the weekend at Cal State Fullerton. Cotton enters the mid-week series vs. Kansas on a career-best seven-game hit streak.
Â
- A LOOK AT THE 'PEN: Tuesday and Wednesday's games marks GCU's first multi-game mid-week series of the season, a chance to get extended work in for the Lopes' pitching staff. Dalton Chapman will get his first start in a GCU uniform after making 14 starts in the junior college ranks a season ago. Nick Hull will look to return to the success he found in his career debut where he tossed 5.0 innings against No. 4/7 TCU in a GCU victory.
Â
SCOUTING KANSAS
Expectations were raised for the Jayhawks this season, largely because of a strong weekend rotation led by junior right-hander Jackson Goddard.
Kansas won its first four weekend series of the season, coming against Murray State, Northwestern, Texas Southern, and St. John's.
GCU and Kansas face off for the fifth consecutive season. It's the longest running active series among all of GCU's non-conference opponents.
It's been a tale of two different weekends for the Jayhawks in their last two times out. Kansas swept a three-game series against then-No. 20 St. John's at home. The Jayhawks won games by scores of 7-4, 6-1, and 6-5. With the momentum of a four-game win streak, Kansas opened Big 12 play by being swept against Texas on the road. The Longhorns won games by scores of 14-4, 4-0 and 5-4.
Sophomore catcher Jaxx Groshans leads Kansas with a .400 batting average and 21 RBIs.
Â
LAST TIME OUT
- GCU dropped three games to reigning College World Series participant, Cal State Fullerton, over the weekend. The Titans used one big-scoring inning in each of the first two games to claim victories before handing the Lopes their first shutout defeat of 2018 in the finale.
Â
WHAT'S NEXT
- Grand Canyon opens up Western Athletic Conference play over the weekend, hosting Chicago State for a three-game series beginning on Friday night.
