PHOENIX - Grand Canyon posted its second-highest hit total of the season while limiting Kansas to just five hits as the Lopes claimed the opener of the mid-week series 12-2 at Brazell Field at GCU Ballpark on Tuesday night.
Playing in its first two-game mid-week series of the season, GCU needed its relievers to step up big and eat up innings. The Lopes did just that, limiting the Jayhawks to two runs on five hits. When GCU got into jams on the basepaths, they worked out of them efficiently and stranded 11 Jayhawks on base.
"What's happened thus far this year is when we've given up another hit, another a walk, and then a one (-run inning) turns into a four or five," head coach
Andy Stankiewicz said. "That was good to see. Just give them the one."
Dalton Chapman got his first start and went 3.2 innings, allowing three hits and striking out two.
"The game plan today was to just come out and attack these guys," Chapman said. "We had a week of baseball that didn't go as planned. The biggest thing today that I talked with Coach (Rich) Dorman was to just stay focused, stay calm, breathe and just have fun out there today."
Behind Chapman,
Jeramy Smith and
Nick Ohanian were both effective in relief. Smith threw 3.1 innings of one-hit, one-run baseball and struck out four. Ohanian pitched the final 2.0 innings scoreless, allowing just one hit while striking out five.
The Lopes' bats did their part in the victory as GCU combined to go 13-for-36 (.361) at the plate as a team. GCU also took advantage of some sloppy defense by Kansas, whose five errors were the most by a GCU opponent since North Dakota State also committed five to open the 2015 season.
Of the four batters who posted multi-hit days, freshman
Brock Burton led the charge with his first career three-hit performance.
"Just looking for a fastball, something I can drive," Burton said. "Not really thinking too much at the plate, just trying to put a good swing on the ball."
The Lopes scored five runs in the third inning, highlighted by run-scoring hits off the bats of
Quin Cotton,
David Avitia and
Preston Pavlica. But after grabbing the 5-1 lead, GCU continued piling on the runs and built its advantage to double digits. The Lopes scored in five innings in a six-inning span.
"That's something that we pride ourselves on," Burton said. "Not just putting up one big spot, (but) continuing it throughout the game and getting some big hits late in the game."
It wasn't always base hits, but rather whatever was needed in the moment. Three of GCU's runs came on sacrifice flies, a season-high.
All nine batters in the GCU lineup recorded either a hit or an RBI.
"Austin (Bull) is a great hitter and so is Quin and Ian (Evans) behind me," Burton said. "It's pretty fun to be able to be in the lineup with those guys. We have a lot of depth on this team. We know that whoever's out on the field is going to give their best."
With a two-hit night, Cotton continued his career-best hit streak, upping the count to eight straight games.
The brief mid-week series wraps up on Wednesday as the Lopes and Jayhawks meet again for a 1 p.m. first pitch.
Nick Hull is scheduled to start for the Lopes, opposite of Kansas' Brandon Ponticelli.
