The Grand Canyon cross country team's season will most likely come to a close in Sacramento on Friday at the NCAA West Regional.
The Lopes are looking to have better races than they had at the WAC Championships two weeks ago.
Â
"We had an off-day at the WAC Championships," GCU head coach
Sara Slattery said. "We had a few good performances but also a few that were below where we expected to be."
Â
Senior
Daniel Flores and junior
Elizabeth Balsan finished as GCU's top runners at the meet. Each earned All-WAC honors with Flores landing on the men's All-WAC first team and Balsan on the women's All-WAC second team.
Â
"Our goal this week is to end our season better than we did a year ago," Slattery said. "We have several freshmen that will run a 10k (10 kilometers)Â for the first time."
Â
Freshmen
Blake Bennett and
Anthony Haren were two of GCU's top five finishers at the WAC Championships, in which the men ran 8 kilometers.
Â
The Lopes raced at the NCAA West Regional course earlier this season for the Capital Cross Challenge on Sept. 29. The women finished third at the meet with 25 other schools in attendance. Junior
Paige Hildebrandt finished third individually at that meet.
Â
"We are excited to end our season on a good note and to continue to improve," Slattery said.
Â
The Lopes' cross country season will come to a close Friday but its competition will continue with the start of the track and field season in January.
