Grego, Fucile take home championships

For the second straight fall tournament in a row, the Grand Canyon men's tennis team won two singles championships.

GCU juniors Lucas Grego and Lorenzo Fucile took home titles in the top two draws this wekend at the Aztec Fall Invitational hosted by San Diego State.

Grego, playing in the top singles flight, defeated Jake Williams and teammates Jakub Novak and Freddie Grant on his way to the final. In the championship match, Grego defeated Daniel Gealer from California-Irvine 6-2, 6-2 to cap off the weekend without dropping a single set.

Fucile had a similar run in his first competition with the full team this season. Coming off an ITA Masters appearance, Fucile also defeated each of his opponents in straight sets over the weekend, including a 6-4, 6-4 win against Luis Lopez from UC-Irvine in the final. Senior Mathieu Rajaonah took third in the same flight, defeating Pacific's Tadiwa Chinamo.

Novak and Grant finished with three singles wins apiece. Valentin Lang won twice and Justin Cvitanovic added a win in the consolation bracket.

In the lone doubles flight, Grego and Cvitanovic paired up and advanced to the semifinals with a 6-2 win over David Higgins and Sahm Irvine from California-San Diego.

The Lopes will enjoy a week off before traveling to Malibu, Calif., for the annual ITA Southwest Regionals from Oct. 18-21.
