SAN JOSE, Calif. — The Grand Canyon men's soccer team allowed a late goal and fell to San José State 1-0 on Friday night at the Spartan Soccer Complex.
The Lopes were in the attacking third when the Spartans intercepted a pass in the 83rd minute. With GCU shifted forward, San José State carried the intercepted pass down the field without much resistance from the Lopes defense. A pass from the left side found Spartans senior Zach Penner, who scored easily from 10 yards out.
San Jose State outshot GCU 14-8 in the conference duel.
The Spartans (5-4-2, 2-1-1 WAC) began the match on the offensive, but the Lopes defense held true in the early stages. GCU freshman goalkeeper
George Tasouris made four saves in the first 27 minutes of the match.
The Lopes (6-7, 2-2 WAC) turned the tide in the latter parts of the first half, doing much of the attacking. GCU did not allow a shot in the final 17 minutes of the first half.
The Lopes were limited to one shot on goal for the match. In the 32nd minute,
Bert Wilton and
Josh Drack broke into the box and took back-to-back shots. Wilton's attempt was saved by the keeper, and Drack's rebound shot was blocked.
GCU closes the weekend with a Sunday matchup at No. 25 Seattle U.
