Following its first conference-opening victory in Division I history, the Lopes return to GCU Stadium to put their 1-0 WAC record on the line against UT Rio Grande Valley on Friday night and conference newcomer California Baptist on Sunday.
Scouting GCU (4-9, 1-0 WAC)
GCU will play at home for the first time in almost a month. Its most recent home game was a 2-1 win over Cal State Fullerton on Sept. 16. The Lopes close out the regular season with four of the final seven games at home.
Senior midfielder
McKenzie Cook continues to lead the GCU offense with 53 shots. The second highest shot total is 14 by sophomore
Camryn Larson.
Senior goalkeeper
Abby Burton currently has 63 saves and a .759 save percentage, good for third and fourth in the conference, respectively.
Scouting UT Rio Grande Valley (7-5-1, 1-1 WAC)
Last week, the Vaqueros opened conference play at home with a 3-0 loss to Kansas City and a 3-1 win against Utah Valley.
The Vaqueros are led offensively by junior Sarah Bonney, who is tied for fourth in the WAC with six goals. Junior goalkeeper Kinga Szemik has started 12 games and recorded 50 saves with a 1.35 goals against average.
Last season, UTRGV went 9-8-3 overall and 4-2-1 in WAC for a third-place conference finish. They were upset by GCU in the first round of the WAC Tournament.
Scouting California Baptist (8-2-1, 1-1 WAC)
Last week, the Lancers opened WAC play for the first time in program history, losing 4-0 to Seattle U and winning 6-0 at Chicago State.
Senior midfielder Desarae Felix is second in the WAC with eight goals. Sophomore goalkeeper Romy Salvador leads the conference with a 0.94 goals against average and a .822 save percentage
California Baptist has won two NCCAA National Championships and has finished with a winning record every year since 1998.
At the Division II level the past five years, the Lancers have made two NCAA Tournament appearances.
