The Grand Canyon women's swimming team took care of business Friday, defeating Seattle U 144-59 and Loyola Marymount 136-66 by winning nine of 11 events.
Robyn Edwards,
Salma Zaitoun,
Karolina Dyrda and
Hannah Barker started the meet off for the Lopes by finishing second in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1 minute, 51.42 seconds.Â
Roaia Mashaly,
Kyra Forrest, Dyrda and
Diana Jaruseviciute collected a first-place finish in the 400 freestyle relay with a time of 3:32.27.Â
Mashaly and McInelly each posted two first-place finishes, as Mashaly won the 200 freestyle (1:53.37) and the 500 freestyle (5:13.71) while McInelly won the 100 butterfly (58.36) and the 100 breaststroke (1:04.44).Â
"Marina (McInelly) and Roaia (Mashaly) were impressive in their two wins today," Lopes head coach
Steve Schaffer said. "Marina just missed the pool record in the 100 breaststroke, which was a record she set in high school while wearing a tech suit. For her to come close in a regular suit, shows she is really improving and getting better. Roaia keeps getting better after coming off a hand injury that required surgery last spring. She is making great progress getting back to form."
Brigit Van Der Vegte also picked up an individual win, as the Dutch swimmer won the 100 backstroke with a time of 57.44 and took second in the 100 breaststroke in 1:08.87.Â
Jaruseviciute won her first individual event of the season by swimming the 50 freestyle in 24.23.
Barker and Forrest also collected their first individual wins -- Barker in the 400 IM (4:40.01) and Forrest in the 100 freestyle (52.77). Barker also finished second in the 100 backstroke (58.75), while Forrest finished third in the 50 freestyle (24.60).Â
"Our freshman are really stepping up this season," Schaffer said. "For them to come in and not only compete, but win races, shows a lot of the talent we have on this team. I'm excited to see how this momentum carries over to tomorrow."
