Sports Medicine adds new trainers to staff

Phoenix – As GCU's first season of NCAA post-season eligibility is underway, everyone is ramping up for the historic year. The GCU Sports Medicine staff is no different. Director of Sports Medicine, Geordie Hackett has bolstered his staff for the 2017-18 year with three new hires in the Athletic Training department.
Octavio Tobar joined the Grand Canyon University Sports Medicine staff in June 2017 as an Assistant Athletic Trainer. He oversees the medical coverage for men's soccer and men's and women's tennis teams. As a University of South Florida graduate (bachelor and masters), Tobar served as the Resident Athletic Trainer for the men's soccer program. While working as a resident and earing his M.S. in Advanced Athletic Training, he gained experience in professional soccer with the Chicago Fire SC and Atlanta United FC of the MLS. He assisted with camps while the teams were in Florida and brings professional experience to his new role.
McKenna Newell joined the Grand Canyon Sports Medicine staff in July 2017 and is in her first year serving as an Intern Athletic Trainer. She oversees the medical care of the men's and women's cross country and men's and women's track and field. Newell received her bachelors and master's degree in Applied Exercise Science with a minor in Nutrition at Azusa Pacific University. The Palm Springs Native also earned her certification as a certified athletic trainer (ATC) in April 2017 and completed her certification as a Certified Corrective Exercise Specialist (CES) through the National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM). She has worked with the USA Track and Field medical staff for the USATF Outdoor Championships and will continue to grow as part of the Lopes staff.
Rachael Bode joined the Grand Canyon University Sports Medicine staff in July 2017 and is in her first year serving as an Assistant Athletic Trainer. She oversees the medical coverage for the women's volleyball and beach volleyball teams. Bode graduated from Florida Southern College before pursing her master's degree at The University of Oklahoma in Adult and Higher Education with an emphasis in Intercollegiate Athletic Administration in May 2017. During her time there she served as the Graduate Assistant Athletic Trainer for the men's tennis and women's volleyball programs. Before moving to Oklahoma the Tampa native completed an internship at the University of Maryland where she assisted with the football and women's gymnastics teams.
