PHOENIX – The Arizona Athletic Training Association met at the Arizona State Capitol last month for the 2016 Athletic Training Day at the Capitol meeting. Whitney Lee, one of Grand Canyon's Sports Medicine staff members was one of 30 members in attendance on February 23.
Lee, a 2008 graduate of GCU, is a certified athletic trainer who currently works with both women's basketball and women's tennis. As a member of the Arizona Athletic Training Association (AZATA) Professional Education and Meetings and Events Committees, AT Day provided an opportunity to bring awareness to certified athletic trainers.
"Athletic trainers joined together to explain the importance of having certified-licensed athletic trainers in Arizona," Lee said. "We wanted to explain who we are and what we do for Arizona's inhabitants as a healthcare profession. We also answered questions and provided more knowledge about athletic training. With National Athletic Training Month in March, this was great opportunity for AZATA and certified athletic trainers everywhere."
Currently with over 500 members, AZATA provides care for athletes in collegiate athletics, rehabilitation clinics, physician's offices and professional sports. By attending AT Day at the Capitol, athletic trainers had the opportunity to speak with the Arizona Legislature System and attend House and Senate Committee meetings.
"Athletic trainers voiced their gratitude to the state government for allowing certified athletic trainers to be licensed in Arizona," Lee explained. "There's no better way to have a voice than to meet with your legislators. We put a name to a face and a face to a profession. It is an honor to give back to the AZATA."
Lee and the rest of the GCU Sports Medicine Team look forward to any opportunity to volunteer and advocate for the practice of sports medicine in the Phoenix metropolitan area.
