PHOENIX – The Grand Canyon Cross Country teams heads to Louisville, Kentucky to race in the Greater Louisville Classic Saturday, September 30. Head coach
Sara Slattery and her team will be one of more than 25 collegiate teams to compete in the event alongside high school and middle school teams that will travel to Louisville for the event.
The GCU men's team is led by junior
Daniel Flores and junior
Brendan Wagler while the women's team is led by senior
Mariah Montoya and sophomore
Elizabeth Balsan. The four will lead the teams though an 8k race for the men and a 5k race for the women.
"We are trained, prepared and built for the 8k and 5k races," coach Slattery said. "It will be good to see where we are at in our fitness because these are the lengths of races we succeed at. There will be a lot of teams at the meet, so we will need to keep our packs tight if we are to do well."
Fellow WAC member, Chicago State will accompany the Lopes in Louisville and it will be the first time this year that GCU will race with another WAC member in the field.
Coming off a two program firsts, the first time receiving a regional ranking and the first time having beaten two of the other three NCAA Division I teams in the state of Arizona, the Lopes will race at the NCAA Nationals site for the first time as well.
"This race will help us prepare for the bigger races later in the year," Slattery added.
With over 25 teams in the field, the racing field will be bigger than the WAC Cross Country Championship race that is scheduled for October 28, but approximately the same size of the NCAA Regional meet that will occur November 10.
Official race time for both the men's and women's teams are still TBA but will occur between 7a.m. PST and 9 a.m. PST.
