PHOENIX, Ariz. – Freshman
Amanda Lopez scored her first collegiate goal off a cross ball from sophomore
Anyssa De Vera, but the Grand Canyon women's soccer team dropped the Sunday afternoon match to Hawaii, 2-1. The Lopes fell to 3-6-1 on the year and Hawaii advanced to 5-4.
The equalizer was netted by Lopez in the 72nd minute of today's match after the Lopes and the Rainbow Warriors were knotted, 0-0, at halftime. Hawaii's Sonest Furtado scored her first goal of the game in the 61st minute and netted the game-winner in the 86th minute to seal the victory.
GCU was outshot by Hawaii, 23-18, and the Lopes registered a total of six shots on frame. The pair of junior
McKenzie Cook and De Vera had four shots apiece to pace GCU, while four players in freshman
Mikaela McGee, senior
Kelsey Smith, and freshmen
Jessica Wong and Lopez each tallied a pair.
Seniors
Milla Benedetti and
Madison Cox each had a shot on the game.
GCU had a strong performance in goal, as senior goalkeeper
Blakely Fraasch made seven saves on the night. Hawaii's Alexis Mata had five.
The Lopes head out on their final non-conference road trip to Cal State Northridge and Cal State Fullerton on Friday and Sunday, respectively. Following the trip, GCU will have a weekend off before starting Western Athletic Conference play on the road.
Grand Canyon returns to the GCU Soccer Stadium on Friday, October 13 for a 7 p.m. showdown with Chicago State.
