Flagstaff, Ariz. – The Grand Canyon cross country team is set to compete at the 37th annual George Kyte Invite, hosted by Northern Arizona on Saturday, Sept. 2.
Located in Flagstaff's Buffalo Park, the event will begin with the men's 4.5 mile race at 1:30 p.m. and will be followed by the women's 2.6 mile course at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday. This will be the Lopes' ninth consecutive George Kyte Invite since the GCU cross country inception in 2009.
"This weekend gives us an indication of our fitness and is our starting point for the year," GCU head coach
Sara Slattery commented. "We had our preseason camp last week in Flagstaff and it showed that most of our athletes have worked hard this summer and put in good training. I predict both teams will be much stronger than a year ago."
In 2016, the men's team finished third in a crowded field, led by former Lope,
Samuel Proctor. Returner
Brendan Wagler finished second on the team a year ago with a 17th overall finish in 24:12. With several key recruits on the men's and women's squads, the Lopes hope to kick off the season with resilience.
"This will be a tough meet," Slattery added. "Our men will face the defending National Champions in NAU, as well as two regionally ranked teams of UCLA and ASU. Our women will face four regionally ranked teams: ASU, NAU, UCLA and UA."
Completing the rest of the field are the men's and women's teams from the University of Arizona, UCLA, Northern Arizona, Western New Mexico, Dixie State, Benedictine University Mesa, Embry-Riddle Arizona, Estrella Mountain CC, Glendale CC, Mesa CC, Pima CC and Navajo Tech.
