ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The Grand Canyon women's soccer team battled home-team New Mexico (1-1, 0-0 Mountain West) in the Lobo Tournament finale, but GCU (0-2, 0-0 WAC) was unable to find its first win of 2017 and came up short, 1-0, on Sunday morning at the UNM Soccer Complex.
For the second-straight contest, the freshman quad of
Mary Joy Carrieres,
Hannah Edwards,
Mikaela McGee and
Hannah Nichols earned a starting spot for the Lopes.
Grand Canyon goalkeeper
Blakely Fraasch led the way in the net with three saves on the day, while the UNM keeper had two.
A New Mexico breakaway in the 25th minute proved to be the difference and put the Lobos on the board, as Leilani Baker fed Claire Lynch with a through ball to split the defense. Lynch beat Fraasch on the dribble and found the back of the net to give UNM a 1-0 lead.
The Lopes and the Lobos put pressure on both ends of the field in the first 45 minutes, as Grand Canyon tallied a shot apiece from forwards
Rachel Mina and
Milla Benedetti. New Mexico had 10 in the first half.
The GCU offense came out with fresh legs after the break, but New Mexico continued the pressure on the back line. The Lopes added two shots in the second half from forward
McKenzie Cook and one from forward
Emma Cain, but GCU was unable to overcome the one-goal deficit and came up short, 1-0.
GCU closes out the three-game road series on Friday, August 25 at Northern Arizona. The Lopes and the Lumberjacks kick off at 7 p.m. in Flagstaff, Arizona.
