ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The Grand Canyon women's soccer team battled hard for 90 minutes in its season opener with Texas Tech, but the Lopes (0-1, 0-0 WAC) came up short to the Red Raiders (1-0, 0-0 Big 12) thanks to an unassisted TTU goal in the 70th minute of play at UNM Soccer Complex. Texas Tech received votes in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America preseason top-25 poll.
The Lopes saw a starting lineup consisting of seven returning players and four freshmen, as
Mikaela McGee,
Hannah Edwards,
Hannah Nichols and
Mary Joy Carrieres made their first collegiate starts for GCU.
"We're very impressed with the way our girls were able to play against a Power Five opponent in Texas Tech," head coach
Derek Leader said. "We had our chances in the game and it showed how resilient we can be. It's a big improvement upon our scrimmage against Arizona.
"I'm very pleased with the way we performed. Obviously, we'd like to get a result, but this is definitely something we can build on.
"Unfortunately we took a big hit when
Madison Wisely went down with an injury, but both her and the team will be able to bounce back and we expect success for the rest of the season."
GCU goalkeeper
Blakely Fraasch tallied the only save of the day and the Raiders were caught offsides four times.
An evenly matched first half, the pair were knotted in a scoreless tie at the break with both squads registering one shot apiece. Forward
McKenzie Cook tallied Grand Canyon's one attempt in the first half, but it was wide left.
Forward
Milla Benedetti tallied GCU's pair of shots in the second, however the Lopes were out-shot 6-2 after the break.
The GCU back line held strong for the final 20 minutes after the Texas Tech goal, but the offensive efforts weren't able to break through the Raiders' defense and the Lopes came up short.
GCU returns to action on Sunday, August 20 at 10:30 a.m. (MST). The Lopes match up against tournament-host New Mexico to close out the Lobo Tournament.
