Grand Canyon puts a wrap on its conference schedule with a big three-game series at Utah Valley beginning on Friday. The Lopes are looking to claim their second Western Athletic Conference regular season title in three seasons, entering the weekend with a 2.5-game lead on second-place New Mexico State. First pitch from Orem is set for 5 p.m. on Friday and Saturday with an 11 a.m. Sunday finale.
The Lopes magic number to clinch the 2017 WAC Regular Season Championship is three, needing any combination of GCU wins (three games left) or New Mexico State losses (six games left). GCU has an 18-3 record in WAC play, its best start to conference in Division I history. Grand Canyon has the nation's third-best conference record, only behind Missouri State (14-0, Missouri Valley) and No. 1 Oregon State (22-3, Pac-12).
Grand Canyon features six batters hitting at least .300 (Austin Bull, Tom Lerouge, Ian Evans, Greg Saenz, Tyler Wyatt, Garrison Schwartz). On the mound, all three of the Lopes' scheduled starters feature ERAs of under 4.00.
GCU is coming off of its seventh consecutive conference series win, topping Seattle U two games to one. After the Redhawks claimed the series opener on Friday night, the Lopes came back with a vengeance on Saturday. Grand Canyon dismantled Seattle U 19-0, posting the program's biggest shutout victory since topping Westmont 21-0 on Jan. 31, 2004. The Lopes improved to 4-0 in rubber matches on the year, winning Sunday's finale 9-6. Jake Repavich and Jack Schneider combined to toss 13.0 innings of eight-hit, one-run baseball in Saturday and Sunday's games.
In mid-week action, the Lopes split with San Jose State, losing on Tuesday but winning on Wednesday. It marked the third split of a two-game series with a Mountain West opponent this season. On Senior Day, the club's lone senior, AJ Franks, picked up the save in a 1-2-3 inning.
Utah Valley dropped three games to New Mexico State at home last weekend in a lopsided series. The Aggies outscored the Wolverines 46-7. Currently ranking fourth in the conference and third in tournament seeding, Utah Valley will be looking to cement its position in the WAC Tournament.
UVU is coming off of a 2016 season which saw the Wolverines reach their first NCAA Tournament in the school's Division I history. Utah Valley swept its way through the WAC Tournament to advance to the Baton Rouge Regional, eventually falling to LSU and Southeastern Louisiana. What was a relatively old team lost 17 players in the offseason.
Following the three-game set in Orem, the Lopes will wrap up the season at UC Davis next weekend.
