SEATTLE – The Grand Canyon men's tennis team ended their regular season with a 7-0 win over WAC opponent Seattle U. With the win, the Lopes finished in second place in the league standings, behind only New Mexico State. GCU ends the year with a 15-10 overall record, and a 4-1 mark in the WAC.
"The guys finished off the season as well as they could have with these last two matches," GCU head coach
Greg Prudhomme praised. "We look forward to being eligible for post-season play next year because the guys seem to be peaking at the right time. I'm very happy for Phil [Kuehnen] and Adrian [Legarreta], our two starting seniors."
Philip Kuehnen and
Adrian Legarreta started strong for the Lopes on Court 1 of doubles play, winning by a 6-3 score. The freshman pair of
Valentin Lang and
Lorenzo Fucile added a 6-0 win on Court 3 and
Mathieu Rajaonah and
Gregoire Balenci won 6-4 on Court 2 to sweep doubles competition.
Senior Legarreta, playing in his last match as a Lope, got things started for GCU in singles play. Normally a battler, Legarreta was dominant against Seattle. He quickly won on Court 4 by scores of 6-1, 6-2 to add another GCU point on the board.
At the top of the lineup, freshman
Francois Musitelli had no problem with Seattle's Ghazayan, winning 6-1, 6-1. On Court 2, Rajaonah also put an exclamation mark on his sophomore season, defeating Schoettler by a 6-1, 6-3 score.
Fucile finished his impressive freshman campaign with a 7-5, 6-3 win on Court 3. He ends the year with a 19-4 record in singles play, the best on the team. Rounding out the GCU winners were Lang and Balenci. Lang won 6-2, 6-3 on Court 5 and Balenci was victorious by scores of 6-4, 6-0 on Court 6.
"Everybody won in straight sets," Prudhomme added. "We capped off a great season. I didn't know that we would be able to get 15 wins with the tough schedule we put together. We were hoping to win the conference, but will deal with second place until we get a chance to change that next year."
Next season, GCU will return seven athletes to the team and also add some newcomers. The Lopes will continue to play a challenging schedule and will be eligible for post-season action next year.
