The Grand Canyon beach volleyball team will kick off its 2017 season in the brand new GCU Beach Volleyball Stadium as hosts of the GCU Beach Tournament beginning Friday, Mar. 3 - Saturday, Mar. 4. The Lopes will face familiar opponents New Mexico and Colorado Mesa before heading into a challenging triple-match day against Texas Christian, Loyola Marymount and Hawai'i. Â
The Lopes are going into this weekend with prior wins against four of the five schools. Grand Canyon defeated New Mexico (4-1) and Colorado Mesa (5-0) when they hosted the schools at the start of the 2016 season, followed by a tighter win on the road against Loyola Marymount (3-2). The Lopes didn't face Texas Christian last season, but they did secure a 5-0 win against the Frogs back in 2015. They will be closing out the weekend tournament against 2016 Final Four participant Hawai'i, who finished last year ranked No. 5 in the nation.
While the Lopes have managed to pick up some wins against these ranked foes in the past, they definitely have their work cut out for them in this opening slate of matches. With New Mexico's 2016 record comparable to Grand Canyon's at 17-9 and Hawai'i facing the Lopes as their stand-alone dual match, GCU will have to bring the heat.
The action-packed weekend and 2017 season debut kicks off for GCU at 5 p.m. MST against New Mexico at the GCU Beach Volleyball Stadium on Friday, Mar. 3. Â
