GCU set to take on South Florida, 19th-ranked host Broncos
BOISE, Idaho — The 11th-ranked Grand Canyon beach volleyball team opened Friday's action with a commanding 5-0 sweep of FIU at Boise State Beach Volleyball Complex and closed the day by recording its seventh consecutive win, a 4-1 victory over Washington.Â
The Lopes (16-10) struck first against FIU on Court 3, where junior Rhea Kohl and sophomore Mae Manthe earned the opening point with a 21-19, 21-14 win.
GCU graduate Jessica Drake and sophomore Youna Coens followed on Court 4, dominating 21-14, 21-11Â to double the lead before senior Katie Keefe and junior Sarah Edler clinched the dual on Court 2 with another sweep, 21-14, 21-19.
Freshman Jordyn Decker and sophomore Grace Goudy added the Lopes' fourth point by winning 21-16, 21-14 on Court 5 before juniors Karynn Garrow and Becca Drake finished the all-sweep dual with a 21-14, 21-15 result on the top court.
Grand Canyon followed with a 4-1 victory over Washington in the second dual, completing a 2-0 day in Boise with another strong result against a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation foe.Â
Against the Huskies, Decker and Coens got the Lopes on the board first with a 21-15, 21-17 win on Court 4.
Washington answered with its lone point in a three-set match on Court 2, but Drake and junior Isabelle Tucker quickly restored the GCU lead with a 21-13, 21-6 rout on Court 5.
Kohl and Manthe then delivered the clinching point on Court 3, where they pulled out a clutch 21-16, 25-23 victory before Garrow and Drake closed the dual by pulling out a 21-17, 17-21, 15-13 battle on Court 1.
