Winner of Oregon/LSU to face the Lopes in 2nd day of MPSF Championship
HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif. — No. 11 Grand Canyon, the No. 6 seed in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championship, opened postseason play with a 4-0 loss to No. 3 Texas, the conference tournament's No. 3 seed, on Wednesday at Spiker Beach.
The Lopes battled closely across multiple courts but were unable to secure a point against the Longhorns, who clinched the dual with wins at Court 3, 1 and 5 before adding a fourth point on Court 4 for their 10 consecutive dual match win.
Texas struck first with a straight-set win at No. 3, where junior Rhea Kohl and sophomore Mae Manthe fell 21-18, 21-14 in the opening decision.
At the top flight, junior Karynn Garrow and junior Becca Drake pushed Texas in both sets but came up short in a 21-19, 21-16 loss.
The dual was decided at No. 5, where GCU freshman Jordyn Decker and sophomore Youna Coens were edged in a tightly contested first set before falling 29-27, 21-18 to secure the Texas victory.
Lopes senior Jessica Drake and junior Isabelle Tucker dropped a 21-19, 21-13 decision at No. 4 after the clinch, while the No. 2 flight of senior Katie Keefe and junior Sarah Edler went unfinished in a three-set battle at the time of the dual's conclusion.
Grand Canyon will continue play Thursday at 11:30 a.m., facing the winner of a morning dual between No. 7 LSU and No. 9 Oregon. The match will be streamed on Big Ten Plus.
