IRVINE, Calif. – In their second match of the day, GCU men's tennis defeated the UC San Diego Tritons 5-1 to win their fifth straight contest. The Lopes now have a record of 5-2 for the season.
"The guys showed some good character and toughness by coming out for their first doubleheader of the season," head coach Greg Prudhomme said. "They did a good job regrouping and refocusing after the good win this morning. Everybody came out strong. San Diego put up a good fight early in the matches but the guys stayed the course, stayed steady mentally and physically, and finished them off in a 5-1 score in singles so the match didn't have to go to doubles."
Freshman
Valentin Lang picked up the first singles point of the day for the Lopes. Lang quickly defeated Han of UCSD by scores of 6-2, 6-2. Fellow freshman
Lorenzo Fucile also won a quick match in the third position as he beat Zheng 6-2, 6-3.
Justin Cvitanovic and
Gregoire Balenci picked up two more wins on courts three and four. Balenci's win clinched the victory for GCU but both teams finished singles play.
Adrian Legarreta then won a tough three match over Miavle, outlasting his opponent 6-1, 4-6, 6-0.
"It was a great first doubleheader of the season and we've got a few more doubleheaders to go this season," Prudhomme added. "At the same time, we're going to want to compete as well as we can on those days. It's great training to make sure that they guys are peaking at the end of the season when we get to conference play."
