With a series victory over No. 22 Oklahoma State in its rearview mirror, the Grand Canyon baseball team heads out onto the road for the first time this season, taking on Wichita State in a three-game weekend series. Both teams enjoyed success over the first weekend of the season, with the Lopes taking 2-of-3 games from the Cowboys and the Shockers sweeping aside fellow WAC member, Utah Valley. All three games will feature afternoon first pitches (2 p.m. on Friday, 1 p.m. on Saturday and 12 p.m. on Sunday). The entire series will be available for viewing via ESPN3, with Sunday's series finale additionally airing locally on Cox7 Arizona.
From a pitching standpoint, GCU will look to pick up right where it left off over opening weekend. Starting pitchers
Jake Wong (the reigning WAC Pitcher of the Week),
Degan Harte and
Jake Repavich combined to throw 18.0 innings, allowing just 10 hits and two runs while striking out 20. With a 1.00 ERA on the weekend, the starters kept the Lopes in all three games and ultimately led them to claiming 2-of-3.
The Lopes got the job done offensively during opening weekend as well, hitting .297 as a team. Grand Canyon ranks second in the WAC in batting average and first in team ERA.
Grand Canyon and Wichita State are set to meet for the first time since 1995. The two schools have met eight times previously, dating back to 1981, with Wichita State holding the 6-2 edge. All-time, GCU is 9-9 against current Missouri Valley schools, going 1-0 against Bradley, 0-1 vs. Southern Illinois, 6-2 vs. Dallas Baptist and 2-6 vs. Wichita State.
The Lopes have won their road opener in the last two seasons, defeating San Francisco a year ago and Cal Poly in 2015.
