LOGAN, Utah – Playing their third match in four days, the GCU women's tennis team was defeated by Utah State 2-5 on Saturday afternoon. Both of the singles victories for the Lopes were earned by freshmen. Grand Canyon's record falls to 2-4 for the season.
"Utah State played really well," head coach Greg Prudhomme began. "When the match started, it looked like it was going to be our quickest loss of the season, but the girls really stepped it up and got back into some matches that we were down in. It was a tough loss but we fought hard."
The Lopes got off to a slow start in the match, losing all three doubles contests. In singles play, GCU fell behind early in most matches. Freshman
Celina Buhr, playing at No. 4, battled back to earn a win with the help of a tiebreaker. Buhr defeated Demerath of Utah State 7-6 (7-2), 7-5. Fellow freshman
Emilia Occhipinti had an easier outing. Occhipinti quickly swept O'Meara by identical 6-3, 6-3 match scores.
"A nice bright side was that our two freshmen were the sole winners today," Prudhomme added. "It speaks highly of the recruiting class that we brought in this year. The girls are stepping up to the level of the competition nicely, so we're going to fight again tomorrow, on the road, and see if we can bring home a win for the last match of this weekend."
GCU will play their final match of the weekend tomorrow against Weber State at 11 a.m.
