GCU drops close match to Nevada, losing 3-4

PHOENIX – The Grand Canyon women's tennis team suffered their first home defeat of the season against the University of Nevada – Reno today at the GCU Tennis facility. The Lopes fell just short in the match, losing by a score of 3-4, and now have an overall team record of 2-3.
"The girls played a great match today," head coach Greg Prudhomme noted. "Unfortunately, we came up just short, losing by one match, 3-4. I was definitely proud of the way they battled."
Nevada started with a 1-0 advantage over GCU after earning wins in two of the three doubles matches. Celina Buhr and Kylie Waschuk of GCU won their match at No. 3 doubles by a score of 6-4 but the remaining Lopes doubles partners were unable to pull out the victories.
In singles play, three GCU players emerged with wins. At No. 3, Susan Baklini edged Gergelyoya of Nevada in two sets. She took the first 6-2, and then won the tiebreaker to win the second set 7-6. Lana Rinaldi used the help of a tiebreaker to earn a win at No. 5. She defeated Ketting of Nevada by scores of 7-6, 6-1. Freshman Emilia Occhipinti also won her match at No. 6, decisively winning 6-3, 6-0 over Achlamov of Nevada.
"We had a couple of girls getting over some illness," Prudhomme added. "One of them, unfortunately had to retire after only set of play. Aside from that, the University of Nevada was a strong team. They fought very hard and it's a match like today that I see helping the girls get a step better and definitely help prepare us for the next phase of the season into the end. We're a little disappointed that we didn't get the win, but I'm happy with the fight that they brought in getting it very close."
The Lopes will return to action on Saturday, Feb. 18 against Utah State. On the following day, GCU will face Weber State to round out a busy week filled with four dual matches.
