OREM, Utah – The Grand Canyon women's soccer team battled through 73 scoreless minutes at Clyde Field in Orem, Utah, until Utah Valley clinched the game-winner in the 74th minute to defeat the Lopes, 1-0, on Friday night. GCU falls to 4-12-1 overall and 1-4-0 in the Western Athletic Conference, while the Wolverines advance to 8-10-0 overall and 4-1-0 in the WAC.
The game was relatively even through the first 45 minutes, as both offenses served balls in behind the opposing defense looking for a chance to find the back of the net.
The Lopes were outshot 10-4 in the first and 16-7 after regulation, but senior goalkeeper
Blakely Fraasch made five saves in the first half alone. Fraasch had seven on the night.
Grand Canyon's seven shots were credited to five separate players. Junior
McKenzie Cook led the Lopes with three looks on the night, while the quad of freshman
Hannah Nichols, seniors
Milla Benedetti and
Madison Cox and sophomore
Anyssa De Vera each tallied one shot apiece.
Cook, Cox and De Vera each had a shot on frame.
The Lopes return home to GCU Soccer Stadium on Sunday, Oct. 22 at 1 p.m. (MST) to host Seattle U for another conference contest. Sunday's game will celebrate cancer awareness as part of GCU's 'Fight For' weekend in athletics. Admission to all GCU women's soccer games are free of charge.
