PHOENIX, Ariz. – The Grand Canyon women's soccer team battled for 110 minutes to a double overtime scoreless draw with Seattle (6-8-3, 2-2-2 WAC) on Sunday afternoon at GCU Soccer Stadium. The Lopes are 4-12-2 overall and 1-4-1 in the Western Athletic Conference.
"Getting the point against a good Seattle side keeps us alive," head coach
Derek Leader said.
"I thought after a slow start, the girls played really well. It all comes down to Friday's match against Bakersfield."
GCU was outshot 16-6 on the game, as junior
McKenzie Cook led the Lopes with three shots, one on goal. Senior
Milla Benedetti had two, one of which was on frame, and freshman
Amanda Lopez had one. Seattle's 16 shots were divided among nine total players.
Senior goalkeeper
Blakely Fraasch made a number of impressive saves on the day for a grand total of six on the outing. The Redhawks keeper made a pair of saves through the double overtime contest.
The Lopes donned pink socks to celebrate cancer awareness, as this weekend was 'Fight For' weekend among Grand Canyon athletes.
Grand Canyon returns to the GCU Soccer Stadium on Friday, Oct. 27, to host CSU Bakersfield in a 4 p.m. (MST) contest. Admission to all women's soccer games is free of charge.
