DENVER– Grand Canyon women's soccer standouts
Milla Benedetti and
Blakely Fraasch have been named Western Athletic Conference Women's Soccer Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, respectively, for the week of Aug. 29-Sept. 4.
In the team's back-to-back shutout victories, Benedetti scored two goals through two contests and was a major contributor in GCU's success in Week 3. She rattled off 14 shots with six finding the target through both contests. Benedetti scored the game-winning goal the second half at the 75th minute mark to secure the Lopes 1-0 victory over Northern Colorado on Sunday. She fired eight shots in the contest, including three on goal. She was one of five goal scorers in Friday's 5-0 victory over in-state foe Northern Arizona, tallying the third goal of the match for the Lopes.
Fraasch, backstopped a GCU defense that posted two shutouts on the weekend. In a dominant 5-0 victory over NAU, Fraasch made a pair of stops to thwart the NAU attack in the first half. In a defensive battle in Sunday's match, she made a key second half save to preserve a 1-0 victory over Northern Colorado.
GCU picked up its first pair of wins this season. The Lopes were 6-for-36 in goals and shot attempts and outscored their opponents 36-to-11.The Lopes also tallied 18 shots on goal in Week 3.
