OREM – The Grand Canyon women's soccer team gave Utah Valley all it could handle in a 2-1 overtime loss on Monday afternoon at Clyde Field.
Despite giving up an early goal in the opening minutes, the Lopes were not rattled, playing hard the rest of the way. GCU got the equalizer before halftime from
Milla Benedetti to even the score at 1-1.
GCU nearly ended the match in the 96
th minute as
Joanna Lagunas beat her defender and fired off a shot that was only kick-saved by the UVU keeper.
The Wolverines got the game winning goal from Alexis Peterson in the 98
th minute, just past the outstretched reach of
Blakely Fraasch.
Fraasch faced all 18 shots by UVU, making four saves in the match.
The Lopes had 14 shots in the match, with six coming on goal.
McKenzie Cook led GCU with four shots while Lagunas added three shots.
UVU got on the board early, taking a 1-0 lead in the 4
th minute. Taylor Kirk scored her first goal of the season, assisted by Abby Jameson and Breanna McCarter.
In the 43
rd minute,
Milla Benedetti scored off a pass from
McKenzie Cook to tie the match at 1-1 headed into halftime.
With four minutes remaining, GCU had a free kick from about 30 yards but Cook's shot went high. The Lopes would have a couple other opportunities in the final minutes of regulation but UVU held off the Lopes.
Both Benedetti and Lagunas had great shots on goal in the overtime period before the Wolverines got the game-winner at the 97:05 mark in the first OT.
The Lopes end non-conference play with a 4-7 record and will open Western Athletic Conference play next week.
GCU is back in action on Friday, October 7 when it takes on Seattle in Seattle at 7 PM.
