PHOENIX – In its final non-conference match of the season at home, the Grand Canyon men's soccer team will face West Coast Conference member, Portland, to continue its four-match home stand. The Lopes have the opportunity to end non-conference with a record of .500 or better for the second straight season under head coach
Schellas Hyndman.
At their brand new home the Lopes have been able to put the ball in the back of the net at GCU Stadium, scoring eight goals in just three games at home this year.
Niki Jackson has found success at home this year, scoring four goals in three matches, including his first career hat trick against IUPUI. GCU continues to generate shots, recording the second most shots in the WAC this year with 97 attempts led by Jackson with 21 shots.
The Lopes' defense continues to show improvement as they have the second lowest goals against average (GAA) in the Western Athletic Conference at 0.99 goals per contest, with goalkeeper
Kendyl Day posting the third lowest GAA in conference.
Thursday's match will be streamed on GCU TV and broadcasted on Univision Radio on 100.3 FM and 105.3 FM.
GCU Notables
- Niki Jackson leads the WAC in goals scored (5) and is tied for the league-lead in points (11) with Utah Valley's Skyler Milne.
- GCU has the sixth highest average attendance in Division I at 3,448 a match and the 10th highest accumulative attendance with 10,343 fans.
- Currently, GCU has the fourth most wins in the WAC during the non-conference season.
- Alex Halis has the second most assists (2) in the WAC.
- This will be the fourth oppoent GCU will play with a winning record in non-conference.
Scouting Portland
The Pilots were picked to finish sixth in the West Coast Conference in the WCC Preseason Coaches' Poll while senior Eddie Sanchez was selected to the Preseason All-WCC Team. So far this year, Sanchez has scored two goals, tied for the second most on the team while Jackson Jellah and Erik Edwardson lead Portland with three goals each. Averaging 1.62 goals per contest, tied for fourth best in the WCC, the Portland defense has limited opponents to 1.25 goals a game. Portland will be looking to get its first win on the road this season, having lost to Sacramento State and UC Davis and recording a draw against Evansville.
