PHOENIX – Grand Canyon baseball continued its series with Sacramento State on Saturday, May 14 at Brazell Stadium. The Lopes struggled to generate runs against the Hornets as they dropped Game 2 of the series 8-3 to fall to 22-26-1 this season.
Sacramento State started off the game strong with two hits and two runs in the top of the 1st followed by an RBI single in the 2nd and back-to-back RBIs in the 3rd.
Jake Repavich retired early for the night after facing 16 batters in 3.0 innings, giving up a total of five runs on seven hits.
With the Lopes trailing 5-0 going into the 4th,
Jake Wong kept the Hornets scoreless for the top of the inning while
Greg Saenz recorded the first base hit of the ballgame for GCU. The Lopes were looking to get some runs on the board when Schwartz walked, advancing Saenz to second base, but came up short, wrapping up the bottom of the 4th with two left on base.
After Sacramento State had another eventful inning, scoring three runs on four hits in the top of the 5th, GCU brought in freshman
Gabe Benavides to replace Wong on the mound.
Benavides had one of his best outings as a Lope, allowing just two hits in 3.0 innings. Three innings was a career-high for the freshman and also threw a career-high three strikeouts. With GCU up to bat in the bottom of the 7th, the Lopes got off to a solid start with a single up the middle by
Jared McDonald. After McDonald advanced to second on a wild pitch,
Matt Haggerty followed up with the third base hit of the game and advanced to first.
Marc Mumper walked, leaving the bases loaded and allowing the Lopes to bring home both McDonald and Haggerty the first two runs of the game for GCU.
The Lopes continued to score with an RBI by Haggerty as Wyatt advanced to home, making the score 8-3.
AJ Franks replaced Benavides on the mound to close out a scoreless 9th inning.
The Lopes conclude their three-game series against Sacramento State Sunday, May 15 at 12 p.m.
