PHOENIX -- Grand Canyon baseball returns home after five games in six days on the road last weekend. The Lopes are set for four straight home games to conclude its 2016 home schedule beginning with a three-game series against Western Athletic Conference opponent, Sacramento State. It is a big weekend for GCU as they sit three games behind the Hornets in the WAC standings. Sacramento State is coming off a series loss to Utah Valley at home as well as a mid-week loss to UC Davis.
All three games will be broadcasted on the GCU Radio Network.
LAST TIME OUT
The Lopes struggled on the road last week within the Western Athletic Conference. GCU ran into a streaking Northern Colorado team that has won its last seven games. The Bears swept GCU at Jackson Field scoring 27 runs in three games. During the series, GCU had two players average .400 or better at the plate in
Thomas Lerouge with a team-high six hits and
Garrison Schwartz hitting .455 at the plate.
SERIES HISTORY
Sacramento State leads the all-time series with a 9-6 record. The last time the two schools faced off the Lopes took the final two games of the series to be crowned WAC Regular Season Champion. Since being a member of the WAC in 2013-14, GCU has won four of the six games played against the Hornets.
This will be the third start that Sam Long will have against GCU. In each of the previous two starts, Long went 6.0 innings and in 2014 he allowed 10 hits and four earned runs at Brazell Stadium and last season in Sacramento he allowed six hits and two runs, which one was earned.
SCOUTING SACRAMENTO STATE
The Hornets went into the season picked to finish second in the Western Athletic Conference, behind Grand Canyon. Sacramento State has been aggressive at the plate this season as they have struck out 139 times, the second most in conference this season. Like GCU, the Hornets will look to take adntange of its opponent on the base paths as both teams are tied for the most stolen bases in the conference with 62 stolen bases a piece. Sacramento State has one of the best pitching staff's in the WAC as Friday's starter, Max Karnos is second in WAC games with a 2.37 ERA and Saturday's starter, Sam Long, was selected as the WAC Preseason Pitcher of the Year. Winning has been nothing new to the Hornets as they were crowned WAC Regular Season Champion and Tournament Champion back in 2014.
