KANSAS CITY – The Grand Canyon men's tennis team couldn't have asked for a better start to its final weekend in the Western Athletic Conference with a 7-0 sweep over Seattle U. With the win over Seattle, the Lopes are in prime position to claim its first WAC title, currently at 4-0 in the conference.
GCU surpasses last year's win total, improving to 12-6 overall this season, matching the most wins they have recorded in a season since being a member of Division I.
"The guys started the weekend exactly how we wanted to," head coach Greg Prudhomme said. "We got good leads on all courts and when Seattle came back fighting, I am happy with the way our guys responded."
With the chances of a WAC title on the line, the Lopes came out with a great approach and took care of business starting by sweeping doubles to take the early 1-0 lead. As the No. 1 duo,
Felix Schueller and
Alexander Roggenkamp set the tone, with the first win of the day with the 6-3 win. Clinching the match on Court 3 for GCU was
Adrian Legarreta and
Gregoire Balenci with the 6-4 win. Completing the sweep on Court 2 for the Lopes' in a tight 7-6 (3) win was
Mitch Maroscher and
Meidy Chazeau.
The Lopes took care of business in singles play as they went up 1-0 on every court in singles. When matches got tight in singles, the Lopes were able to prevail, winning two three-set matches.
Justin Cvitanovic picked up GCU's first win in singles with an impressive 6-1, 6-1 win on Court 6 to give GCU the early 2-0 lead. The bottom of GCU's lineup continued to take care of business to start singles play as Chazeau extended GCU's lead to 3-0 with a win on Court 5. After the bottom of the lineup took care of business, Maroscher sealed the win for the Lopes on Court 1 with a 6-2, 6-3 win.
"When the sets got close, we showed great mental toughness and I am proud of our guys," Prudhomme said. "We will get some rest and get ready for a tough match against UMKC but we will be ready."
The Lopes will now look to claim its first WAC title on Sunday, April 10, against Missouri-Kansas City.
