Lopes take down Bobcats

PHOENIX – The Grand Canyon women's tennis team has reached .500 this season with a win at home over Montana State. The Lopes found themselves in a nail-biter but prevailed 4-3 for their second straight victory.
"I am really proud of the girls today because we had a couple of injuries but we persevered and got the win," head coach Greg Prudhomme said. "Montana State battled until the end and I am proud of the way we responded."
For the second straight match, GCU was able to come away with the doubles point with victories on courts one and three. Tatum Prudhomme and Susan Baklini continued their hot start to the season with a 6-1 win on court one. After Montana State won on court two, the doubles point came down to court three and the Lopes duo of Lana Macukat and Lana Rinaldi came out victorious. Macukat and Rinaldi defeated Linda Vink and Shelby Cerkovnik 6-0 to give GCU the 1-0 lead.
Montana State fought back in singles with victories on courts two, four and six but GCU was able to withstand the pressure and defeat MSU three times in singles to pull out the victory. Prudhomme went 2-0 on the day on court one with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Naomi Holopainen. On court three Baklini had to grind out a win over Jessica Brycki with a tight 7-5 win in the first set, which propelled Baklini to take the second set 6-3 for the victory.
"We have been on the losing end this season in 4-3 matches but I knew we would turn the corner eventually," Prudhomme said. "This win is good for the girls' confidence and their hard work is paying off."
GCU's final win of the day came from Rinaldi over Cerkovnik on court five to give GCU the 4-3 victory. Rinaldi was able to take control of the match from the first set, defeating Cerkovnik 6-2, 6-0 for the final win of the day.
Grand Canyon will return to the court next week when they travel to face Hawai'i and Pacific.
