Lopes start weekend in Hawaii with 4-0 loss

HONOLULU, Hawaii – To begin a two-match weekend in Hawaii, the Grand Canyon women's tennis team dropped a 4-0 decision to the University of Hawaii on Saturday.
"The girls had a tough match today," head coach Greg Prudhomme said. "They battled really well. It's a bit of a shame that the score doesn't show how competitive the match was."
Playing in a clinch-clinch format due to Hawaii's packed weekend schedule, matches went unfinished as soon as the Rainbow Wahine clinched the match victory. This left a lot of close matches unfinished.
"We were in the third set with Susan Baklini. We were close to getting in the third set with Lana Rinaldi. We were up 5-3 in the second set with Lana Macukat getting ready to go to a third. Tatum Prudhomme had a lead late in the first set at 5-4," Prudhomme outlined. "The players were really battling and the score was not completely reflective of how tough the match was."
The Lopes' one set victory of the day came in Set 1 of the third singles match. Balklini took the set from Hawaii's Sarah Gealer 6-3. Gealer went on to win the second set and force a third set before the match was halted. Grand Canyon's singles lineup produced several close sets, including a narrow 7-5 loss from Prudhomme and a tight 7-6 loss by Macukat.
"I was proud of the team's effort and their fight out there," Prudhomme said. "They got a lot out of it. We're looking forward to getting back on the court tomorrow to play another tough team in University of Pacific. We'll take the experience from these two road matches back home on the courts when we start conference play next weekend."
The weekend concludes for the Lopes in Hawaii with a matchup against University of Pacific. The match is set to begin at 2 p.m. PT.
