LAS VEGAS – The GCU women's tennis team improved to 4-5 on the season after a near-sweep of Southern Utah on Saturday afternoon. The Lopes defeated the Thunderbirds 6-1 behind strong play in both singles and doubles.
"The girls did a great job today," head coach Greg Prudhomme stated. "It was nice to get back on the match court. We had a couple injuries and illnesses that we were getting over a week or so ago. The girls were healthy again and they got a solid win today."
The Lopes swept the doubles matchups to earn an early 1-0 lead entering singles play.
Lana Macukat and
Lana Rinaldi made quick work of their opponents at No. 4 and No. 5 singles. Both won in two sets by scores of 6-1, 6-1.
Tatum Prudhomme continued her dominance at No. 1 singles, earning a 6-2, 6-1 victory to improve to 7-2 in singles competitions this season.
Susan Baklini and
Kylie Waschuk each earned singles wins as well to round out the Lopes effort.
"The girls were happy to get back into the winning ways and they're looking forward to returning home for the match against Montana State," Prudhomme added. "We'll keep working hard in practice and be ready for it."
Grand Canyon returns to Phoenix to face Montana State Friday, March 4. The match will be held at 12 p.m. at Paseo Racquet Center.
