GCU falls to Utah State

LOGAN, Utah – The Grand Canyon women's tennis team concluded its two-match road trip with a matchup against Utah State. Tatum Prudhomme and Lana Macukat capped off a perfect weekend in singles play but the Lopes fell to Utah State 5-2.
"Great hard fought effort by our players today," assistant coach Amit Maharaj said. "Our players did a great job at being coachable and implementing the tactics that we gave them. As a coach that is all we can ask from our players."
GCU picked up one win in doubles from the No. 3 duo, Lana Rinaldi and Macukat as they capped off a perfect 2-0 weekend against Idaho State and Utah State. The GCU duo went up against Sabrina Demerath and Monika Van De Vondel and Rinaldi and Macukat defeated Utah State 6-4. Utah State won on courts one and two to start the match with a 1-0 lead.
GCU's first win of the day in singles came from Prudhomme on court one against Ekaterina Tugarinova. In order to pull off a 2-0 weekend in singles, Prduhomme would have to come out victorious in a three-set match. Prudhomme took the first set 6-3 but Tugarinova forced a third set after coming back in the second set 6-4. Prudhomme quickly rallied and stormed back to take the third set 6-0 to come out on top.
Macukat capped off an impressive weekend on court five going 2-0. Macukat defeated Idaho State's Laura Theus 6-2, 6-2 on Saturday and on Sunday Macukat followed up with another exceptional match defeating Jenna Kane 6-2, 6-0.
After Prudhomme and Macukat each picked up two wins in singles play this weekend, the two now lead GCU in wins this season, each with six.
"I am very proud of they handled themselves on the court showing support for one another," Maharaj added. "We had a great attitude and effort by all of our girls."
GCU will return to action next weekend when they face Southern Utah on the road.
