Lopes hang tough with Idaho State

POCATELLO, Idaho – The Grand Canyon women's tennis team started its two match road trip this weekend starting in Idaho with a matchup against Idaho State. The Lopes dropped a nail biter to the Bengals with a 4-3 loss. GCU is now 3-4 this season.
"I am proud of the team's attitude and effort," assistant coach Amit Maharaj said. "We were dealing with some illnesses and injuries going into the match but we came out with great energy on all courts."
Idaho State started the match with a 1-0 lead after taking the doubles point. Lana Rinaldi and Lana Macukat were the lone GCU duo to come away with a victory. Rinaldi and Macukat were able to defeat Kasey Bacon and Taylor Cole 7-6 for their fourth win of the season.
The first match that finished in singles was a win for the Lopes as Tatum Prudhomme was able to defeat Bacon 6-3, 6-2 on court one for the win. With the victory, Prudhomme improves to 5-2 this season on court one. Idaho State would rally three straight wins after Prudhomme's victory to clinch the match for the Bengals. The Lopes ended the day on a high note with two straight victories from Macukat and Rinaldi. Macukat won on court five as she defeated Laura Theus in two straight 6-2 sets. The final win of the day from GCU came from Rinaldi on court six with the 6-1, 4-6, 11-9 win over Cole.
"Unfortunately we fell short today but we will use this match to get better," Maharaj said. "We will take what we learned today and prepare for tomorrow's match and the rest of the season."
